Opinion Piece - New Starter Justice

Shape History - May 2020

During 2020, I changed jobs. In the few days between finishing my previous job and my contracted start date for the new one, the UK went into a national lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. My start date was delayed, and in order to qualify for the Job Retention Scheme (or ‘furlough’) I had to be on a company’s payroll on 28 February 2020 and have had RTI submitted by 19 March 2020. Therefore, I was unable to be furloughed by my new employer.

I spent my time between March and September founding and organising a national campaign called New Starter Justice, which brought together all the people in the UK who had been affected by changing jobs around the same time as me and who had therefore not been entitled to furlough. I started a Facebook group for those affected, which peaked at around 10,000 members, although the estimated total of “new starters” affected was actually around 2 million. I was heavily involved with the day to day running of the group and the wider campaign (often putting in 16-hour days), alongside eight other unpaid members. Between us we took on the administrative and public image responsibilities.

During this, I wrote a feature opinion piece for Shape History.

I was also a speaker in Shape History’s webinar series ‘The Great Adaptation, which was broadcasted live on Facebook on 13 May 2020.

Pre-Release Review of 'Downhill'

Cumbria Crack - March 2014

I was given a review copy of the film Downhill during my work with Cumbria Crack in order to write a review before the release, and also attended the premiere in Ambleside. The review was also published later in Cumbrian Local (pages 20-22).
